Punching bag techniques
Although some may feel that learning punching bag techniques
might limit them to what they can do on a bag, the fact is that if a
person develops these techniques on the bag, he will be able to better
know how to defend himself if the situation ever arises.
• A person working on his punching bag techniques must establish
his stance by keeping his upper body squared toward the bag or possibly
angled back just slightly. This will minimize the area an attacker can
attack.
• In a real fight, a person would need to try to locate a weak
spot or an open spot on the aggressor’s body. The nose, throat
and eyes are all potential attack areas. When working on the punching
bag, a person should pay attention to where these areas might be on
a person relative to where they are on the punching bag.
• Keeping the palm open is best. This means that a person should
practice his punching bag techniques by driving forward with his shoulders
and striking the bag with the base of the palm. The same thing should
be done when a person is trying to defend himself from an attacker.
This puts more power and leverage into a punch.
Practicing punching bag techniques may not be as much fun when on the
bag, but the fact is that those who practice and get the technique down
will be better prepared for a would-be attacker.
