Free standing punching bags
There
are two main types of punching bags: hanging and free standing punching
bags. Free standing punching bags have a few benefits associated with
them:
· They are easy to move around – many of them have rounded
bases that make them easy to roll over to a corner or a closet when
you are finished using them.
· They are great for both punching and kicking – the foam
begins close to the base, creating a larger useable kicking surface.
· Some, like “BOB” (Body Opponent Bag), provide for
realistic training and are great for target training and practicing
sparring techniques.
· They are consistent – not much swing.
Of course, some people prefer hanging bags over free standing punching
bags. Some of the reasons they site are:
· Free standing punching bags can move across the floor as you
kick them. This can, however, usually be solved by placing rubber matting
beneath them, getting a heavier bag, or placing the bag on a different
floor surface.
· Some say they feel “empty” to hit, that you can’t
sink a solid hit into one.
· They can be knocked over (again, though, if you have one that
is heavy enough, you should be fine).
· Some like how hanging bags swing toward you, creating more
realistic combat situations.
Most free standing punching bags can be filled with water or sand.
Some people prefer to fill their bags with water because it can help
generate more energy feedback, making contact feel more realistic. They
weigh anywhere from about 170 and 300 pounds when filled.
